The Faculty of Education and International Studies offers teacher education in a lifelong learning perspective qualifying for work in kindergartens, primary schools, lower and upper secondary schools. The faculty also offers programmes within multicultural understanding, interpretation and development studies.

Department of International Studies and Interpreting at OsloMet invites applicants for a permanent position as Professor in the field of international education and development in the Global South. The position will play a significant role in teaching and research activities for the department and you must have achieved a high level of expertise in the field; particularly regarding education perspectives from the Global South.

Teaching and supervision will primarily be connected to the Master’s programme in International Education and Development. This Master’s Programme was established 20 years ago and has a critical perspective on education and development in the Global South. The Master’s programme recruits students from all over the world, and all teaching is conducted in English. The curriculum has recently undergone revision, and now includes both a specialization in international education and in development. The main focus of the Master’s programme is on education in the Global South

The professor will play a key role in the development and implementation of the revised Master’s programme. You are also expected to have a central role in promoting cooperation across sections of the department, both in terms of research and teaching. 45% of the workload in the position is allocated to research activities. This includes writing of academic articles/books, applying for research funding as well as guiding and supporting colleagues in their research. An important task will be to recruit Master’s and PhD students in the department’s research work.

The department has ambitions to strengthen its position as a leading academic environment in diversity studies, intercultural communication, international education and global development across disciplines at the university. The new professor is expected to play a central role in this work. 

 Main duties

  • Teaching and student supervision, mainly at the Master’s level, but also at PhD or bachelor level.
  • Research activities in education in the Global South, including publications in high ranking academic journals.
  • Initiate applications for external research funding.
  • Contribute to international cooperation on all levels.
  • Participate in public debates on international education and development.
  • Administrative work related to the academic activity.


The applicants must have the following qualifications:

  • A PhD degree and comprehensive research experience in the field of international education and development in the Global South. To be a successful applicant you must have in-depth knowledge of in critical education discourses related to the Global South.
  • Experience from international research activities in the field of education in the Global South.
  • Profound knowledge of research methods, particularly qualitative and participatory methods.
  • Pedagogical competence, teaching and supervising experience from Master and, preferably, PhD level.
  • Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

General criteria for a position as Professor are stipulated in Regulations relating to Appointment and Promotion to Teaching and Research Positions. Proficiency in Norwegian is required within the first three years of the employment contract. If needed, Norwegian language classes will be offered to comply with the requirements of the position. Candidates who lack formal qualifications in practical pedagogy at the time of appointment must commit themselves to complete OsloMet’s course in basic pedagogical competence (15 ECTS credits) within two years.

The university will test pedagogical skills in connection with the formal interview, by asking the candidate to present a trial lecture on a pre-set subject.

Expert evaluation

  • CV, references and all pages of certificates/diplomas. The certificates/diplomas must include ECTS grades (A–F). Foreign diplomas must be translated into English by the degree-conferring institution. Education taken outside of Norway should preferably be recognised in advance by NOKUT, and a confirmed copy of the letter of recognition should be enclosed.
  • Up to 10 academic publications including your PhD dissertation and a list of your publications.

This position’s salary level is in accordance with the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, job title Professor and positon code 1013. Salary NOK 696 500 – 882 500 annually, before tax. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well qualified applicants. By law 2% of the salary is deducted and applied towards the State Pension Fund.
